TIMBERS TENTH ANNIVERSARY
In 2020 the Portland Timbers celebrated their 10th season in the MLS, and to commemorate the occasion we designed and executed a 10th anniversary campaign throughout the year.
The 2020 pandemic ultimately cancelled our season so we’ve had to pivot a lot of our keystone ideas into the digital space. In the last few months of 2020 we were lucky enough to see the Timbers participate and win the MLS is Back Tournament. During that tournament and the months following we were able to get our 10th season back on track.
GRAPHIC DESIGNER // BRAND IDENTITY
INITIAL SKETCHES
Mid-2019 we started the initial design process for our 10th season. Below are a few sketches that I’ve explored.

VECTOR PROCESS
As I brought in my sketches it was apparent that using the number 10 wasn’t going to cut it. The subtlety of the Timbers brand didn’t work as we’ve hoped. We explored the use of X instead, and we noticed the counter-shape of the Timbers axe fit well on an X—We explored that in what would finally be our anniversary logo.

2020 JERSEY KIT TRIM
The initial application of this logo was the 2020 secondary kit trim. It was also showcased in our animated jersey launch that was created by a 3rd-party agency.
AXE PORTRAITS COLLABORATION
The Axe Portraits is a Timbers tradition culminating every 5 years. This is the third Axe photoshoot, dubbed the PTXPortraits. This is in collaboration with my Creative Director at that time, Alex Kocher. Visit his portfolio page here to learn more about the project.

MERCHANDISE CAPSULE COLLECTION
We created a scarf and shirts as part of a PTX Timbers Capsule Collection. We also created pins, beanies and patches.

DIGITAL GRAPHICS
We made sure that our social, web and video assets called out our 10th season as we expanded on marketing initiatives. One of those projects is a video series called “From the Archives” where our video team highlighted momentous occasions in club history.
IN-STADIUM GRAPHICS
Although our season with fans was cut short due to the pandemic, our game presentation team was able to apply the 10th anniversary look in-stadium.
